Discover Casa Malpais: Where Ancient Astronomy Meets the Volcanic Landscape
What secrets can an 800-year-old pueblo reveal?
Hidden among the ancient lava flows overlooking Springerville lies one of the Southwest's most remarkable archaeological treasures—Casa Malpais National Historic Landmark. Built and occupied by the Mogollon people between 1240 and 1350 AD, this extraordinary site showcases a sophisticated culture whose knowledge of architecture, astronomy, and the natural world continues to amaze visitors today.
Explore the remains of a 50–60 room pueblo, stand inside a magnificent Great Kiva, and discover the famous solar calendar that helped ancient inhabitants mark the passage of seasons. Follow an ancient stone staircase to the rim of a shield volcano and experience sweeping views of the landscape that shaped the lives of those who once called Casa Malpais home.
Known as the "Fissure Pueblo" after being documented by Frank Hamilton Cushing in 1883, Casa Malpais is renowned for its unique astronomical alignments and ingenious methods of tracking the sun. These discoveries provide a fascinating glimpse into the knowledge, beliefs, and daily lives of the Mogollon people.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964, Casa Malpais remains one of Arizona's most significant cultural sites—and one of its best-kept secrets.
